POLICY
CONCERNING FACULTY DEPARTMENTAL TRANSFER
FAM 525
FSD 97-07
Faculty Affairs Committee
November, 1997
1. Purpose:
The purpose of this policy is to enable, whenever
appropriate, the transfer of a faculty member from one department to another.
2. Request for
Transfer
The request to transfer a faculty member from
one department to another shall be initiated by the faculty member. This
request shall be made in memo form addressed to the faculty member's school
dean. The memo shall include a justification for the transfer.
3. Approval Process
Requests for transfer shall be forwarded by
the faculty member's school dean to the department chairs of both the
current department and the department to which the transfer is requested
(recipient department). If the recipient department is outside of the
faculty member's school, the request shall also be forwarded to the dean
of that school. The appropriate department chairs shall then review the
request with the tenure-track members of the two departments. Each department
shall vote on whether to recommend or not recommend the transfer. All
tenure-track faculty members in a department shall be eligible to vote.
The vote shall be conducted by confidential mail ballot and require an
affirmative vote of an absolute majority of the tenure-track members of
the department for approval of transfer to pass. If the recipient department
does not agree to the transfer, the request shall not be approved. If
the recipient department does approve the transfer, the school dean (or
the school deans jointly if a second school is involved) shall then consider
the recommendations of both departments and make a recommendation to the
Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Vice President shall make the
final decision on whether to approve the transfer. [Note: an absolute
majority in this context means 50% plus 1 of all tenure-track members
of the department irrespective of whether they cast a valid ballot.]
4. Faculty Rights
and Status
Faculty members involved in transfers from
one department to another within the university shall retain all rights,
including tenure and seniority, in their new department.
